How to Measure a Toilet Tank or Toilet Tank Lid

Toilet Tank Lid Measurement

Start by flipping the lid upside down. Now measure the maximum distance you can find left to right. This may be towards the front, the back, or the middle of the lid, as all lids have different shapes. The most important thing is to measure it at its maximum on the underside. Repeat the process measuring front to back. These dimensions should be communicated in the format LL" x WW", for example 19.5" x 7.5". Try to be as accurate as possible, as sometimes as small as 1/4" can make a difference between two different lids. The normal expected range for left to right should be 12 to 24", with most tank lids being 17" to 20". The normal expected range for front to back should be 6" to 12" with most tank lids measuring 7" to 9".

Toilet Tank Measurement

Similar to tank tops, tanks are measured at their maximum points left to right and front to back. There is no need to measure how wide the porcelain is or internal dimensions, and no need to measure the height of the tank. These dimensions should be communicated in the format LL" x WW", for example 19.5" x 7.5". Try to be as accurate as possible, as sometimes as small as 1/4" can make a difference between two different tanks. The normal expected range for left to right should be 11 to 23", with most tanks being 16" to 19". The normal expected range for front to back should be 5" to 11" with most tank lids measuring 6" to 8".
